Brisbane’s Courier Mail newspaper (Tuesday 30 May 2023) carried an article and editorial concerning rail upgrades for Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast for the 2032 Olympics as part of the Senate’s inquiry into Olympic preparedness . The article (page 6 in the print edition) commented on upgrades and extensions to the following:

1. 1. Extending the Gold Coast light rail network to the Gold Coast Airport; and
   2. Expanding the Sunshine Coast rail network to Maroochydore.

The editorial (page 30 in the print edition) commented on the potential of these projects can serve as a lasting legacy to South East Queensland and the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast  in particular. A major concern is that infrastructure development relating to the Olympics – particularly public transport investment – is being held hostage to partisan political posturing by State and Commonwealth governments nominally on the same ideological persuasion. Another concern is that public transport development (and the broader infrastructure issue) is being debated and developed haphazardlly without due regard to long term sustainability and serviceability to residents, businesses and visitors alike.
